Nehemiah
– Becoming A Disciplined Leader
Lesson 4: "A Great Leadership Model" Nehemiah 3
"the whole body…builds itself up in love…as each part does its work" Eph. 4:16
We need to be organized
- Every person was in place – "next to him" (e.g. Neh. 3:1-5)
- People were assigned by residence (Neh. 3:21,23-24,28-30)
- People would be more personally involved
- People would not have to travel to another part of the city
- In case of attack, people would be more motivated to protect their families
- The task could be a family effort, using all available talent
- Assignments for Commuters (Neh. 3:2,5,7)
- Assignment by vocation
- The priests worked on the Sheep Gate
We need to work together
- Those who were experience and qualified – "officials" (Neh. 3:9,12,14-19)
- All ages, all walks of life
- Priests, goldsmiths, perfumers, temple servants, merchants (Neh. 1,8,26,32)
- Even Shallum’s daughters! (Neh. 3:12)
- A few exceptions (Neh. 3:5)
We all need encouragement
- Nehemiah mentions 75 people by name, and 15 groups of people
- Don’t overlook Baruch! (Neh. 3:20)
3 Principles
#1) The Principle of Coordination
- We must "plan our work" and "work our plan"
#2)
The Principle of Cooperation
- The body of Christ (I Cor. 12:12-31, Eph. 4:16)
- A temple to the Lord (Eph. 2:19-21)
#3)
The Principle of Commendation
- Remember Barnabas (Acts 4:36)
- A biblical command (I Thess. 5:11, Heb. 10:24-25)
- Challenges from Proverbs (Prov. 12:25, 16:24, 25:11)
